30 seconds off of the highway its dead quite and surrounded by woods. The campsites aren't far at all from off the road, but the road is very easy to drive on. Over all I enjoyed it. 41F- 65F in mid October. Also theres a distant gun range(?) In the distance so heard a handful of gunshots in the morning. It wasnt too bad just small 22s.
Had no problem finding a site. Nice big areas as well and a bunch of trails.
Temps were in the 30s at night and snow on the ground. We slept in the car so it didn’t matter but the snow can make it difficult to drive if you don’t have a 4x4. However, our Prius made it just fine and such a beautiful view in the morning ! It is hard to find a turnout at night so I suggest getting there before sun down.
Very pretty National Forest area with tall trees, away from towns though easy to access by highway and near enough to Payson for supplies. Ran away to here from Phoenix escaping the heat, was not disappointed. Only drawback is nearby ranch with cows, but maybe further away along the forest road it's not an issue.
No services. Pack in pack out. Road was a little rough, but cars were driving on it fine. Just gotta go slow. Small river rock and such in the dirt road. Not many low hanging trees to be concerned about. Man made fire rings with rocks throught the area we stayed in. Saw a few quads and dirt bikes out for a ride. People riding bicycles and someone on horseback. Plesant time will go back.
