Beware of bears

Beautiful, peaceful site mid-week in July, but there are bears in the area that seem conditioned to scour campsites for food. A mom and 2 cubs walked by my site about 50 feet from me. I walked over to tell the neighbors and watched the mom come back and pull my cooler out of the trunk of my car. Keep food locked up and bring spray in case of emergency.

Gorgeous

The road is definitely not easy but doable in just about any suv sedans will have trouble but should be able to do it

Made it

We got caught by an unexpected snow storm on 10/11/20 once we made it to the top but the ride back on the snow was much smoother especially since I have a snow feature. It was beautiful and was probably the last of the fall weather for there for this season.

Very Bumpy Road

If you have good tires you'll probably be fine but you likely WILL be annoyed by the incessant bumping for miles and miles.

Some sites have amazing views but fill up quickly.

Hard Driving at Times, Great Fall Views

We really didn't have good luck finding a good site as late as we started up the road. Our site ended up being super hilly, right among trees, so I was rolling downhill, and laying on roots in the tent all night. Saw some amazing sites others had gotten to! Road is rough, not meant for RVs, unless you have a crazy liftkit and are confident navigating corners. In the envoy, we did not make it to the lake up top. I'm so glad I got to see the aspens at their best color!!!

Camped by a lake

The dirt road in was fine, though some of the turn offs for smaller roads looked pretty rough. The spot we camped at was gorgeous, next to a lake with lots of little frogs. My friend heard bears calling each other all around the lake late at night.

Rough but amazing views

The road is extremely rough and there's really only one spot ~3miles in (where I camped) to turn around with any sizable rig until you get to the top of the pass. The gate 3.4miles from the dry lake campground is as far as I would go without a short wheelbase high-clearance vehicle.

I'd say there are probably only 4-5 campgrounds a class A or short trailer could fit and it was very full in July. A good number of amazing tent spots. If you can get further up the pass there are a lot more beautiful camping options.

Very popular mountain biking trails. Beautiful. Great cell signal. Not super level. My motorcycle carrier broke on this bumpy road so watch out!
