At least 10 well-spaced, private sites with fire rings right along the Arkansas river. There are hiking trails and rock climbing nearby. No facilities. Pack it in, pack it out. The town of BV is less than 10 minutes away, and offers public restrooms, coin-op showers, public WiFi, coffee shops, grocery/hardware stores, restaurants, rafting expeditions, and more. This is a very beautiful spot, with convenient nearby amenities.
Here are the actual coordinates: 38.868562,-106.147364
This will take you to the entry point where you drive down to the camp site.
Road definitely very rutted but I managed just fine in my 28ft RV. The road isn’t very long so if you can handle some rocking back and forth for a few minutes it’s okay worth it.
Nice and clean. Even has a campground host. I had good reception - 3 bars 4G with ATT.
Note that this is on the WEST side of the river! The gps coords took two parties to the east side of the river. Nice sites, river is not rught next to all sites but within 100 or so feet. You an see other campers but sites are 100+ feet apart so you still feel like you have some privacy, you just can’t be too loud at night. Fire pits/grill grates. We got there on a Wednesday late afternoon in June and there were only two sites left.
Right by the river and the campground host was awesome! The people in Buena Vista were kinda rude though so that was sad but the nature made up for it once we got away from the people. The river is stunning and you can wind up the mountains for more place to camp for FREE. A bunch of people were riding quads and side by sides all day and some of the night. The drive through the mountains was gorgeous
Private and beautiful FREE campground! Fairly easy to get to although I would recommend AWD, as the dirt road to the campsites is pretty bumpy. I had no problems in my ‘02 Lexus RX300 with AWD. The Arkansas River was steps from our campsite which had a small fire pit. The views are incredible, lots of trails and exploring around the river. I would definitely recommend and will be back!
Semi secluded. I stayed in my car in site 10 the road is decently traveled. I have a crosstrek and it got in fine very beautiful in the morning. It’s also a tenth mile or so walk to the river!
Beautiful setting with the river and the cliffs. Plenty to do if you like climbing, rafting, kayaking or fishing. Or just sitting and watching nature.
Awesome free BLM campground less than 10 minutes from Buena Vista. Sites are well-spaced and private, and the mountain views and sunsets are incredible. Fall asleep to the rushing sounds of the Arkansas River. Cell signal is spotty, but usable with a booster (or a Jetpack, which seems to work better than phones for picking up signal). This campground does not have toilets or water, so pack it in pack it out. The nearby town of BV has many useful amenities for full time travelers, including public WiFi, public restrooms, and coin-op showers. We've camped here multiple times, once with a fairly large group of 10+ vehicles. Great spot for an extended stay.
