Keep access gate closed due to wild burro population thrives in this area creating a roadway hazard.
Clean, safe and convenient. We pulled in late and pulled out by 6am. Great night sleep, quiet with a pretty view.
Maybe we didn't drive far enough (we went maybe half a mile along a rough road), but we ended up next to a target shooting range. Fine at night, but about 8:00 in the morning I started hearing creaks and pops and got a little alarmed that something was going wrong with our RV. Once I got outside, it was clear that it was the sound of small arms fire next door. Road was rough, there's some kind of pipeline running near us, along with power lines. But, hey, it was free!
Stayed here on New Years Eve Eve and arrived at night time only to be welcomed by the large pack of wild donkeys. Once they saw our headlights they kept their distance, but they definitely made noise all night. We didn’t go too far into the plot of land since we only have 2wd and didn’t switch to our off road tires and the terrain there is muddy clay after the rain. All vehicles should be able to make it through, just be aware of weather conditions, know your vehicle, and use better judgment!
I took it slow until we hit a wet spot of mud clay so I pulled off of the main road onto more firm ground and that ended up being the perfect little campsite for the night.
I car camped with my 3 dogs and 1 cat who had a lot of fun sniffing donkey poop in the morning. The donkeys were nowhere to be found in the daytime, but definitely active at night. I didn’t let my dogs out of my sight when I let them out to potty and got prepped for bed.
Thankfully there weren’t many campers at all! It was super clean where we parked besides a couple cigarette butts and a water jug that I ended up taking to throw out myself. We even had a little fire pit in our area. If you have pups they’ll definitely be safe during the day and enjoy walking through this area, but be cautious of fallen cactus needles.
If you are a light sleeper, opt for sleeping a bit further down into the land as the shooting range is active. We drove all day and definitely slept through it. Overall would definitely recommend this place to anyone staying in or passing through Phoenix.
Be honest I been gone 3 months. An Truthfully I miss this place. Best site ever I ever camp at It's super big they are building in the front But be respectful. And it's roads now. But I miss my lil camp area. 30 Minutes away From Phoenix
There is construction, but the gate is usually always open. If not, open it, and drive through the construction. They don't mind. Just be respectful and stay out of their way.
Area on both sides of highway are under construction.
This location in now blocked off by the regular gate and a second construction gate . However there are many people pulled off car camping on the pull outs on the south side of the carefree highway.
No longer available.
Not home sweet home. Numerous RV campers within sight. Ok place to tent camp when had nowhere else to go. Woke the second morning as hundreds of marathon participants streamed in. People come here to drive their 4x4s and to shoot. with enough daylight, one could probably find a secluded area.
If you're looking for peaceful seclusion in nature, this is far from it. This is squatterland. Huge quantities of RVers living here, sitting in lawn chairs and dwidling their thumbs all day. Also some people living in cars and tents. Some campers may mean well, but I got the stink eye and sketchy vibes from the few I drove by.
There are so many people squatting out here, every inch is covered, and it's very difficult to find a decent spot.
There is litter all over. You can also hear planes from the airport its right next to, you can hear dump trucks driving by all day, and you can hear shooters. One day I woke up to shooters not 100 yards away from me.
If you think you're alone, rest assured you'll wake up with 15 neighbors all around you.
Not to mention this is not BLM, I wouldn't be surprised if it got enforced by the cops one day.
This site is no longer accessible.
Next to a gun range, a highway, an asphalt plant, a federal prison and an active construction site.. not an ideal campsite, but would work for an evening stop over. If you're looking for somewhere pleasant to camp, look elsewhere.
You can cross the big black pipe that runs under the power lines by the construction site offices. We had to drive through a gap in the workers parked vehicles to get to a gravel ramp over the pipe. If you stay on the right side of the pipe, there are a few spots down the road, but they had big piles of junk.
Gunshots, coyotes, hot air balloons, donkeys, stunt planes... What's not to love?
Especially for the low, low price of 'free'. Keep the gate closed and ignore the water project on entry. At the start of the road you can get over the irrigation pipe on the left. Nice quite spots just a bit up the road!
Beautiful open space. There are 3 other people camping out here. Trails for walking. We've seen and heard cows, donkeys, owls, and coyotes. Its not far from a gas station and grocery store. Its right on the other side of Ben Avery Shooting Range so be prepared to hear lots of gun noise.

I just needed a spot to camp one night with a good cell signal. I was the only person here and there is very little noise besides passing cars that I barely heard. Burro poo lol, close the gate behind you. Good T-Mobile and Verizon cell signal for online teaching.
Not too far out of town. Most of the land is in accessable because of a huge irrigation pipe laying on the ground but it was nice. Loud burros but we slept fine. The cop drones are annoying but no one came to bug us. There was another rv. I'd say 6-8 usable campsites available with enough space. Also. My crappy minivan made it.
There is a gate you need to go through and close it afterwards. Very quiet and nice place to rest
Being next to a decent size shooting complex and a federal prison down the trail, it's surprisingly quiet. The gunshots are not as loud as I thought they would be. Lots of wild burro poop, but I've yet to see one. Plenty of room to spread out. I went to the other side of the wash. Away from the RV's and generators. A few spots on the main strip were completely trashed with tons of large items. Got the bonus of two different stunt air planes practicing one after the other the day before, almost right over head. Was really fun. It was really windy at times. Sometimes for more than 12 hours. It was really nice when the wind was low.
Lots of hot air balloon sightings in the morning morning. The unique sights distract from the lack of hiking opportunities by foot near us.
Right next to a shooting rang, definitely loud in the weekend mornings but we don’t feel unsafe. Look at the map when you pick your camp spot the road separates BLM land from privet land.
It's a nice spot. We saw a wolf get chased off by wild burros so we felt very safe. The only reason it's not 5 is the noise. There are shooting ranges in the area so you will hear them going off. But its free and there are wild burros I mean come on!
